Gamma Sigma Lambda Chapter was chartered April 1, 1947 in Fort Valley, Georgia. In order to continue their quest for excellence, several brothers decided to form an AlumniChapter that would be composed of members from Fort Valley, Montezuma, Macon, and other surrounding Middle Georgia counties. Some of those men were Brother Harvey Bannister, Brother William Anderson, Brother Raymond Pitts, Brother Waldo Blanchet, Brother Earl Pierro, and Brother Maulvin Engram. The brothers began meeting and discussed ways to keep the “House of Alpha” strong. They were already serving as role models for the youth, but they had a thirst to do more in the community. They were extremely concerned about having someone to serve as mentors for Gamma Zeta Chapter at Fort Valley State College(now University). It was early in life that the brothers of Gamma Sigma Lambda Chapter realized that the college brothers were the branches who served as the “life blood”. Also, they knew that the fruits of this tree were the youth who would be the future leaders of both Alpha Phi Alpha and the community. They kept reminding themselves that the inception of Alpha Phi Alpha was because of the fortitude and determination of college brothers. Therefore, they knew that as a chapter, they had to provide strong leadership for the college brothers. It was very apparent to the brothers in this chapter that the key to strengthening the membership was in the hands of young graduate membership. They knew that they had to represent the bridge between the graduate brothers and the college life.
